ISO 9001:2008

What is ISO 9001?

As of 2006, the ISO 9001 standard has been implemented by some 887, 770 organizations in 161 countries.   This makes it the most widely used standard in the world.  As such, ISO 9001 has become an international reference for quality management in business-to-business dealings.

The ISO 9001 Standard provides requirements for "quality management", that is, for what an organization does to fulfill its customers’ quality requirements, while aiming to enhance customer satisfaction, and achieve continual improvement of its performance.

ISO 9001 is sometimes referred to as a generic standard because it can be applied to any organization, large or small, whatever its product, including whether its "product" is actually a service, in any sector of activity, and whether it is a business enterprise, a public administration, or a government department.  There are, in fact, a proliferation of industry specific standards that use ISO 9001 as a foundation and then add requirements that are cogent to the particular industry for which it is written; e.g., ISO/TS 16949 for the auto industry, or ISO/IEC 17025 for laboratories.

What benefits does ISO 9001 bring to organization?

Results from a recent study conducted by UCLA show that “U.S. publicly held companies traded on the NYSE that are certified to ISO 9000 Quality Standard show significant improvement in financial performance compared to those companies that have not pursued the standard.”

Within the company, ISO brings:

  • Well defined and documented procedures that improve consistency
  • Greater employee awareness of what they do and how they impact product quality and customer satisfaction
  • Quality that can be measured
  • Reduced costs because there is a decreased rate of defects, and those that defects that do occur are caught earlier and corrected at less cost
  • Corrective action, taken whenever defects occur

Beyond these reasons, ISO 9001 registration:

  • Brings increased customer satisfaction (a main focus of the standard)
  • Provides access to new markets because many organizations and industry sectors (auto for example) require ISO 9001 from all their suppliers
